Many people still believe fish oil is the gold standard for omega-3.
But fish don't actually produce omega-3. They accumulate it by eating algae.
Which means algae is the original source of the omega-3 found in fish.
Whether it comes from a fish or directly from algae, your body absorbs and uses it in exactly the same way.
Both fish oil and algae oil provide the same omega-3 fats: DHA and EPA. Once absorbed, your body doesn't know whether they came from a fish or directly from algae. They are the same molecules.
What matters during pregnancy is getting enough of these omega-3 fats. DHA quite literally becomes part of your baby's developing brain and eye tissue, while EPA helps support your own omega-3 status throughout pregnancy.
In other words, the source is different. The omega-3 itself is the same.
So if effectiveness is the question, algae and fish oil are on equal footing.
